Anat Cohen Quartetinho — Musica Brasileira

Brazilian music styles have influenced jazz for more than 60 years. It was not least thanks to Stan Getz that bossa nova became a fashion trend in the United States and Europe. The development of Brazilian music is closely linked to the European colonization of the country since its beginnings in 1500. It has its roots in the European music of the former colonial power Portugal; in the African musical traditions of the slaves deported to Brazil; and, to a lesser extent, in those of the indigenous native population. Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo are the two centers of the Brazilian entertainment industry and the economic hub of the country. Both cities attract musicians from all over the country, so that regional music styles can develop into national music styles here like nowhere else.
The U.S. clarinetist Anat Cohen comes from a musical family; her brothers are the soprano saxophonist Yuval Cohen and the trumpeter Avishai Cohen. She has been named leading young clarinetist in the Down Beat Critics' Poll several times since 2006 (most recently in 2011) and has been named leading clarinetist every year since 2012 without interruption. At the end of 2019, her album “Triple Helix” was nominated for the 2020 Grammy Awards. The unique composer and band leader has been involved with the Brazilian music scene for years and also lives in Brazil from time to time.
For this concert, she will present her new project Quartetinho for the first time, a quartet with three musicians from Brazil. SF Jazz wrote about this band: “Culled from the ranks of her tentet, this new quartet expands the deeply rooted Brazilian influences of Cohen's music to embrace exciting new sonorities, featuring pianist Vitor Gonçalves, who doubles on accordion, and bassist Tal Mashiach expanding the ensemble sound with his expert skills on the Brazilian 7-string guitar. Percussionist James Shipp blends Brazilian percussion and the melodic possibilities of the vibraphone with a nod to modern approaches, adding electronic elements to Cohen's masterful compositions.”
Tickets are CHF 37.20-83.90.
