Whispers From Tides and Forests
Kunsthaus Baselland
Until August 17, 2025
This is an exhibition of quiet tones and, at the same time, delicate, new stories that we should begin to tell in times of crisis and upheaval. Against the backdrop of climate change; the threat and exploitation of landscapes, forests, and rivers; as well as waves of migration resulting from extreme climatic or political situations that are currently becoming increasingly apparent around the world, new narratives are needed that may deviate from previous stories. For, as professor and anthropologist Anna Tsing recently put it, we should prepare ourselves today to do without the old narratives that could tell us where we stand.
The invited, internationally active artists enable these subtle, new narratives that place people in a new relationship between space, time, and the body. They speak of care and concern in the coexistence of humans and nature, but also of moving forward and the power of resilience, without ignoring current events. They offer a glimpse into the world—from South America to Europe—of crisis-ridden places and themes of vulnerability and loss, but also of trees, forest floors with mushroom cultures, rivers, and landscapes full of beauty, poetry, and the future.
