UEFA Women’s European Football Championship 2025
In July 2025, Switzerland will host the 2025 Women’s European Football Championship, with Basel one of the host cities. Matches will be played in Basel, Bern, Geneva, Zürich, St. Gallen, Luzern, Thun, and Sion, with a total of five matches played in St. Jakob-Park, including the opening match between Switzerland and Norway on July 2 and the final match on July 27. In addition to these, two group matches (July 8 and 13) and a quarterfinal match (July 19) will take place in Basel.
The UEFA Women’s European Football Championship 2025 is intended to have a long-term impact, with the goal of doubling the number of licensed female players, coaches, and referees. The main message is that it’s about more than just sports—it’s about togetherness, equality, and the strong message for young girls, “You belong on the pitch.”
Basel Will Celebrate in Style
Over the 31 matches, the total capacity of the tournament is approximately 725,000 seats. The city of Basel is expecting around half a million visitors to the fan zones and offers much more than just football. On the five match days, the focus will be on the matches and fan experiences; on the remaining 20 days, Basel will offer a rich sport, cultural, and family program for everyone.
Fan Zones
From July 1-27, there will be two fan zones at Barfüsserplatz and Messeplatz that will be open daily from 15:00-23:00, except on match days, when they will be open from 11:00. Note that the zones will be closed on July 14 and 21. The “Stage of Emotions” will be taking place on Barfüsserplatz with live broadcasts, concerts, panel discussions, and podcasts. Visit https://weuro2025basel.ch/programm/ for the full program. The event kicks off on July 1 with an opening ceremony and concerts by Anna Rossinelli and Moonpools. On July 6, “Super Sunday” at Messeplatz will feature a celebrity match, freestyle shows, and DJ sets centered around the Switzerland vs. Iceland match.
Family Activities & Children’s Program
A multi-sport program focused on girls and women awaits guests at the Basel Messe exhibition center. Highlights include goalie training, girls’ soccer afternoons, freestyle shows, and a large ball obstacle course. A giant slide, a water park, and interactive stations from the European Championship sponsors ensure fun for all ages.
Culture & Exhibitions
In the exhibition “Trophies to Dream About,” the Historisches Museum (at Barfüsserplatz) is showing, among other things, the 2025 European Championship trophy, the 1985 FC Basel Championship Cup, and the 1956 Champions League trophy. The exhibit is in German and English and the opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00-17:00; admission is free. At the Tinguely Museum, guests with match tickets or jerseys receive discounted admission, complemented by a ride on the artistic ghost train in Solitude Park and a European Championship beach with a goal wall and access to the Rhein. And when you need a break from the heat and the crowds, the “Play & Chill” program offers a quiet and cool retreat in the Stadtcasino, which is also directly adjacent to Barfüsserplatz. There are listening, reading, and gaming stations on two floors that serve as a place to relax. There will also be a photo booth for personal souvenir photos.
Open-air Cinema
On July 15 and 20, Barfüsserplatz will be transformed into a cinema. Screenings include “Kick it like Beckham,” “Marinette,” and “The Miracle of Bern.”
Restaurants
To ensure that the population can properly celebrate this sporting event in their own city, restaurants have adjusted their opening hours: Indoor restaurants are permitted to remain open throughout the day, while outdoor dining is permitted until 02:00 in the city center and until midnight in the outlying districts.
Overview of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025
The Women’s UEFA 2025 tournament will have 16 participants, divided into four groups.
Group A: Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Finland
Group B: Spain, Portugal, Belgium, and Italy
Group C: Germany, Poland, Denmark, and Sweden
Group D: France, England (defending champions), Wales, and Netherlands
The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. From there, the tournament proceeds in a knockout format. Matches that are tied after 90 minutes go into extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout.
The referee technologies for this tournament will be the exact same ones that were used at the men’s UEFA EURO 2024: video assistant referee (VAR), goal-line technology (TLT), connected ball technology, and semi-automatic offside technology. Both connected ball technology and semi-automatic offside technology will be used for the first time at the Women’s EURO. The VAR+football Technologies Hub for the tournament will be located in Nyon.
