Greg Niemczuk — The Late Masterpieces of Frédéric Chopin

After his spectacular debut at the Stadcasino in 2024, Polish pianist Greg Niemczuk returns to Basel with a new program, “The Late Masterpieces of Frédéric Chopin.” The last years of Chopin's life were very difficult, yet he managed to create his greatest masterpieces during this time. Niemczuk, who dedicated his artistic life almost exclusively to Chopin’s music, will present masterpieces from the years 1842–1847. The pianist will also discuss the music to help the audience better understand these masterpieces. In the first part of the concert you will hear Three Mazurkas, op. 50, which are very symbolic, full of longing for the fatherland; Two Nocturnes, op. 55, which describe the strongest emotions—depression after the death of the closest friend and beautiful, fulfilled ; Barcarolle, op. 60, a passionate and romantic love duet; and Ballade No. 4, op. 52, a true, poetic masterpiece and a story written in sounds. In the second part, Niemczuk will present two of Chopin's greatest masterpieces: Polonaise-Fantasy, op. 61, and Sonata No. 3, op. 58. The Polonaise-Fantasy is the most mysterious of all Chopin's works—it is his testament, a musical narrative of his entire life. Sonata No. 3 is an entire universe of music. In four movements, Chopin contained his entire self in every dimension. This will be no ordinary piano concerto—it will be a profound spiritual experience of the most brilliant masterpieces of the poet of the piano presented by one of his most outstanding performers.
Tickets are CHF 77.80-92.90.
