On this evening, Jazz Festival Basel will be presenting “Flamenco Gala Night,” a night filled with Spanish guitar, singers, clappers, and dancers. Tomatito (Spanish diminutive of tomato) was born in Almería in 1958. His grandfather Miguel Fernández Cortés, better known as “El Tomate,” and his father José Fernández Castro, also called “El Tomate,” were well-known folk and flamenco guitarists. When he was 12 years old, the family moved from Almería to Málaga. In addition to playing in various orchestras in the city, he performed with his father in various tablaos, such as the Taberna Gitana. There, he not only had the famous flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía as an audience member, but also met Camarón de la Isla. Camarón noticed the guitarist at a festival in Málaga and remembered Tomatito, who was 15 years old at the time. This marked the beginning of an 18-year collaboration between the two artists, which only ended with Camarón's death. Tomatito accompanied Camarón on many recordings with Paco de Lucía. In 1997, Tomatito was officially awarded the Medalla de Plata by the provincial government of Andalusia. In 2000, another highlight of his career followed with the Latin Grammy for Best Jazz Album Spain (with pianist Michel Camilo). He also received the Latin Grammy for Best Flamenco Album for París 1987.
Tickets are CHF 40.20-95.90.
