The beautiful young princess is playing in the castle garden with her golden ball when it suddenly slips from her fingers and falls into the deep castle well. When she weeps bitterly over the loss of her beloved toy, a frog appears as if from nowhere on the well’s surface. He offers to retrieve the ball for the princess, but only if she, in return, will accept him as an equal playmate and share her bed and table with him. The princess agrees, but when the frog returns to the surface with the ball, she snatches it up and runs back into the castle. The next day, there's a knock at the castle door; it's the frog, reminding the princess of her promise. When the king hears the story from the previous day, he orders his daughter to keep her word. Will the princess keep her promise? Will the frog really become a prince? This exceptionally heartfelt and turbulent tale by the Brothers Grimm is about trust, commitment, friendship, patience, willpower, first love—and growing up. Everybody, unfortunately, grows up sooner or later and has to learn to stand by their word and keep their promises, even if it takes a lot of effort. This is what the princess in this fairy tale learns, and thus she transforms from a carefree girl into a woman. And the frog? He needs a lot of time, tolerance, and determination before he reaches his goal.
Fairy tales do not claim to describe the world as it is. Rather, the imagery of fairy tales encourages theatergoers to create their own mental images. “The Frog Prince” is a story about growing up and its pitfalls. An entertaining and enjoyable afternoon at the theater for the whole family is guaranteed!
