On this evening, Jazz Festival Basel will be presenting two world-class pianists in a concert entitled “Piano Summit.” Humorists such as Rome-based Stefano Bollani and Helsinki's Iiro Rantala are masters of musical appreciation. They love what they play. And they bow to each other's artistry, to the ancestors of melody, and also to the possibilities of their instruments. They are two artists who harmonize because both revere Italian opera.
The musicians revel and smile musically. They indulge in the fun of expanding their jazz-tinged repertoire with traditions that, from the perspective of a good song, have actually been part of it for a long time. It is this mixture that enchants. Two humorists who are a pleasure to listen to as they discover each other musically. And they do so with the melodies of Italian opera, which are important to them and also a little new to both of them. Offbeat celebrates the two master pianists!
