The Chinese artist Cao Fei (*1978, Guangzhou) is one of the defining voices of her generation. For her first solo exhibition in Switzerland, she transforms the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart (Contemporary Art Museum) into an immersive work of art in the form of a city, in which impressive installations and video worlds from her last 20 years of work merge.
Cao Fei is an undisputed pioneer in the creation of digital worlds. Her early works influenced an entire generation of artists from Asia and beyond. For over two decades, she has been dealing with the effects of social and technological upheavals on human life in her works—from video installations to digital simulations to virtual reality settings—and has played a pioneering role in thinking about art, media, technology, and the future.
