Senses Enchanted
Kunsthaus Baselland
Until April 4, 2027
An exhibition devoted to the theme of perception is particularly fitting for the Kunsthaus Baselland’s new home on the Dreispitz area. After all, every exhibition hopes for visitors who move attentively through its spaces, observing not only the artworks in relation to their architectural setting but also the many framed views created by the building itself: towards the sky, the nearby birch grove, and the urban landscape of Dreispitz. This exhibition introduces yet another dimension of perception—one embodied by works that explore perception itself in distinct and compelling ways. They invite viewers to experience their own individual perception in direct encounter with artworks and immersive installations, offering an opportunity to refine, challenge, and expand the ways in which they perceive.
The exhibition is based on a selection of works from the renowned the Contemporary Art Collection ”la Caixa” Foundation. Established in the 1980s, this extensive private collection in Spain is regarded as one of the country’s most significant collections of contemporary art and has also become an important point of reference for artists worldwide through its sustained commitment to acquiring contemporary works, including large-scale installations.
The idea of presenting a selection of works from the collection through the lens of perception originated with Nimfa Bisbe, Collection director of the ”la Caixa” Foundation, together with Ferran Barenblit, independent curator, former director of the MACBA (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona), and Chief Curator of the 16th Shanghai Biennale 2027. The new Kunsthaus Baselland proved to be an ideal venue for this project. At the same time, the exhibition resonates with the institution’s curatorial program, which has long fostered artistic dialogues with France, Spain, and South America while exploring meaningful relationships between art, architecture, and artists working in the region.
The presentation of works from the Contemporary Art Collection ”la Caixa” Foundation collection is complemented by artists who live and work in the Basel region or have long-standing connections to Basel-Landschaft. Their works enter into dialogue with the collection and include Maya Rikli, Giacomo Santiago Rogado, Hagar Schmidhalter, and Remy Zaugg.
