Workshop — Drawing Christmas Motifs

For centuries, the holly tree has been associated with winter and Christmas traditions. This is due in part to its bright red berries and its evergreen foliage, which it retains year-round. The green and red of its leaves and berries continue to shape the Christmas color scheme. Holly—symbolizing constancy, hope, and the idea of a harmonious family Christmas—has become virtually indispensable in festive depictions. Today, the term "holly berries" is often used to describe winter decorations that, in addition to holly berries, also include other winter fruits such as those of mistletoe, hawthorn, or wild rose. The Christmas exhibition at the Spielzeug Welten Museum traces the history of berries from their use in pagan customs, through culinary and medicinal traditions, to their significance as a Christmas symbol. Historical tree ornaments, festive decorations, Christmas cards, and many other objects demonstrate why these bright red berries have embodied hope, protection, and joy for centuries.
In conjunction with this special Christmas exhibition, there will be a workshop where participants will illustrate holly berries and other wreath motifs using calligraphy under the guidance of Romana Moser from RomanaSchrift. This workshop is limited to persons ages 10 and up and has a limited number of participants.
Cost is CHF 15; register at event@swm-basel.ch.
