photo basel is Switzerland’s first and only international art fair dedicated to photography-based art. It brings together galleries from around the world in a unique, authentic setting. In recent years, photography has established itself with museums and the art market, and the fair wants to enhance and nourish the creative trade of all major art players within and around photography. This year, photo basel welcomes 39 international exhibitors from over 15 countries, showcasing more than 450 photographic works by over 165 artists.
As in previous years, photo basel will enhance its main gallery section with a carefully curated program designed to foster a deeper appreciation, understanding, and dialogue around photography, its movements, and its practices. This edition will feature special exhibitions and themed sectors from “Beyond photography” to “Novum.”
“Beyond Photography”—as the name suggests—goes far beyond photography with the use of various mixing techniques, special printing techniques, or a shift from the two-dimensional into the three-dimensional, expanding the medium of photography. The “Novum” sector will specifically show works that have never been shown before—works created especially for photo basel or bodies of works that have only now been properly discovered or rediscovered. The acclaimed Swiss Magazine “Annabelle” will present a curated selection of female photographers from Switzerland and abroad whose selected works reflect the diversity, strength, and perspectives of female photography; look for the “annabelle’s choice” sticker throughout the fair.
photo basel is also proud to present the Maurice de Mauriac Award for the third consecutive year, alongside the inaugural SIYU Award. Additionally, a series of exclusive panel talks will bring together gallerists, artists, and our curator for insightful discussions throughout the fair.
