For nearly four weeks each summer, the Münsterplatz is transformed into a large outdoor cinema, with an enormous screen and proper seating. Named after its main sponsor, the Allianz Cinema will be presenting movies each evening that include new releases, classics, a “surprise” night where the movie title is not unveiled until the presentation, as well as nights especially designated for families. Movies are always shown in their original language, with German and (if available) French subtitles.
Site and beer garden open at 19:00; the films start after sunset (check program for specific times). Be sure to get there early as the seats are not numbered and are available on a first-come-first-served basis. As this is an open-air cinema, the seating area is not covered, but the films will be presented irrespective of weather. You can buy your tickets online or at the box office on the spot (subject to availability). Visit their website for more information on this event and for a complete list of the movie dates and times.
Tickets are CHF 16 for adults and CHF 11 for students; they are on sale now. On Allianz Family Night, entrance is free for children up to age 14. The Focus Basel Evening is free for all visitors while tickets last. Tickets for this evening must be reserved in advance or at the box office.
