Dianne Reeves in Church

Dianne Reeves began her career like many great jazz singers: Before striking out on her own, she first completed her apprenticeship and traveled the world alongside greats such as trumpeter Clark Terry (her first mentor), pianist Billy Childs, Sérgio Mendes, and Harry Belafonte. Only then did she embark on her solo career, receiving welcome start-up assistance from her older cousin, keyboardist and producer George Duke. He put together an illustrious band for her debut album “Dianne Reeves,” including Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Clarke, and Tony Williams. In the mid-1990s, she achieved success with albums such as “Quiet After the Storm” and “The Grand Encounter,” establishing herself artistically and rising to become one of the outstanding jazz singers of her generation.
Then, at the beginning of the new millennium, she achieved a unique feat: she was the first singer ever to receive a Grammy for three consecutive albums: in 2001 for the live album “In the Moment,” in 2002 for “The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan,” and in 2003 for “A Little Moonlight.” This was followed in 2005 by the soundtrack for the critically acclaimed and multi-award-winning George Clooney film “Good Night, And Good Luck,” for which the singer received her fourth Grammy. It wasn't until 2014 that she made her comeback with “Beautiful Life,” immediately winning her fifth Grammy for this soul-jazz gem.
Hardly any other jazz singer today knows how to captivate her audience as much as Reeves. “It's important to learn to trust your instincts,” Reeves explains her secret to success. “I just try to discover the special magic of each night—this includes exploring how the band and I can best shape the music on a given night. Because every audience has different expectations. That's why our program isn't set in advance; we choose the pieces during the performance based on how we feel.” On this evening, she will be accompanied by guitarist Romero Lubambo for magical moments of jazz, blues, and gospel in the atmospheric Martinskirche Basel!
Tickets are CHF 34.10-94.10.
