Sona Jobarteh & Group

On this evening, Jazz Festival Basel will be presenting a concert entitled “West Africa.”
The kora is a West African harp-like instrument with 21 strings, traditionally played by men. Sona Jobarteh, a musician, composer, and actress from a Griot family in Gambia, West Africa, has broken this old rule! She plays the kora standing up and demonstrates her complex musical skills on stage as the frontwoman of her own band. She learned to play the instrument from her brother at age 4, laying the foundation for her international career. Later, Jobarteh studied music at the Royal College of Music, composition at the Purcell School of Music, and African Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. Her compositions uniquely blend influences of modern music with traditional African music, remaining connected to her roots. The Sona Jobarteh Sextet enjoys great success worldwide and captivates audiences in Europe, the USA, and Africa.
Tickets are CHF 46.30-91.90.
