On this evening, Jazz Festival Basel will be presenting “The Drummers Night.” Peter Clark Erskine (*1954) is the most outstanding American jazz drummer of the last 45 years. He is considered one of the most versatile and busiest jazz drummers of recent decades. He became known to a wider audience primarily through his work with the fusion group Weather Report from 1978, which he left in 1982 to play with the fusion band Steps Ahead. Together with bassists such as Jaco Pastorius, John Patitucci, Michael Formanek, Marc Johnson, Eddie Gomez, and Dave Holland, he formed an exemplary rhythm section. Erskine has contributed to over 700 LP and CD productions as a drummer. In addition to jazz, he has also worked with musicians from the pop and rock genres. His playing is characterized by flawless hand and footwork, musicality, and interactivity. He has been voted best jazz drummer eight times by the readers of Modern Drummer magazine—that is, by drummers themselves.
