European Days of Monuments 2025 — Basel

Various Locations
Saturday, 13 September

The Europäische Tage des Denkmals (European Days of Monuments, also called European Heritage Days) are part of an EU-wide initiative that since 1994 has been implemented under various names in many European countries. Held this year on September 13 and 14 in Switzerland, these days are designed to celebrate European heritage by giving everybody an opportunity to visit some of Europe’s beautiful historical monuments. This year's European Heritage Days have the motto "Architectural Histories."
In Basel, the Heritage Day activities will be concentrated on Saturday, September 13. Through various activities, the topic will be interpreted with a focus on the theme of the current exhibition at the Museum Kleines Klingental, "Livable City—28 Urban Developments in Denmark. A City Dialogue with Basel," For Basel's Heritage day, this motto will be modified to "Basel—A Livable City," and will explore the question of what makes a city worth living through numerous guided tours and walks throughout the city. The topic is as fascinating as it is diverse. It examines all those areas and places that have become livable, are currently becoming livable, or could become so in the future thanks to commitment to heritage preservation—or strategies with a similar approach.
The program was compiled with several partner organizations, local experts, and knowledgeable specialists. The tours will be accompanied by a lunchtime concert with the Kammerorchester and the jazzy finale of the Heritage Day in the Great Refectory and the courtyard of the Kleiner Klingental. Vintage trams will also be on tour in the city.
All tours and events on Heritage Day in Basel—and in the rest of Switzerland—are free of charge. The detailed program will be published online at the beginning of September. However, the number of participants is limited for all guided tours and some other events; so be sure to register in advance online at https://www.basler-baukultur.ch/europaeischer-tag-des-denkmals-2025.
