Discover the Magic of Wasserfallen

Just 30 minutes from Basel, the Region Wasserfallen offers an unforgettable escape into nature. Lodged in the gentle hills above Reigoldswil, at the heart of Basel’s countryside, you will find breathtaking scenery, outdoor adventures, and authentic culinary experiences.

From Reigoldswil, you can take a gondola of the cable car up to 955 meters above sea level and enjoy stunning views of forests, meadows, and mountains. Especially in the summer, there are lots of hiking opportunities of various difficulties and lengths that lead you through a beautiful landscape and to spectacular lookout points where you will have a fantastic view of the Alpine peaks.

Summer Activities

For those seeking adventure aside from hiking, the Region Wasserfallen offers plenty of additional outdoor activities. For an adrenalin rush, you can try out the Waldseilpark (forest high-wire park) that is located directly at the mountain station of the cable car. Get ready for a balancing act and climb or swing from tree to tree. Supervised by trained guides and secured at all times, the park offers different levels of difficulty, making it a fun and safe challenge for the whole family.

If you prefer action on the ground, the “Trottiplausch” (scooter fun) is a must: ride a sturdy scooter-bike equipped with brakes and helmet down 4.5 km of winding forest paths and sweeping meadows back to the base station. Whether calm and smooth or steep and curvy, it’s a ride that guarantees excitement and memories.

Winter Activities

Fun at Wasserfallen does not stop once the snow arrives. With snow on the ground, the road that is used for the scooter run in summer is turned into a 4.5 km sledding run. You can hire the sleds, paying the fee when purchasing your gondola ticket and then picking the sleds up at the mountain station for a thrilling run down the mountain to Reigoldswil.

There are also some winter hiking opportunities, and you can also bring or hire snowshoes. There is a marked snowshoe trail from the mountain station of the gondola to the Vogelberg. For groups, they also offer guided snowshoe tours, which include a snowshoe hike to one of the restaurants, a fondue dinner, hike back, and the gondola of sledding ride back into the valley.

Food and Drink

Several restaurants offer food and drink to revive you on your exploration of the area. Closest to the gondola station, the Berggasthaus Hintere Wasserfallen welcomes you with hearty, regional cuisine and seasonal specialties. For example, in autumn 2025, guests can look forward to special events such as the Oktoberfest with Bavarian delights, refined venison buffets in October, and a festive Austrian National Day menu at the end of the month. Later in the year, a gourmet evening in November and Advent specials in December create perfect moments to savor good food in a unique alpine atmosphere. And all year round, they offer delicious fondue specials. It is a perfect place to spend fun or festive evenings with the family or for companies to have holiday parties.

Other restaurants in the area provide you with nourishment on your hikes. Note that these have more limited/seasonal opening times, so check the website if they are open.

Getting There

While you can certainly hike up to Wasserfallen, taking the gondola is the easiest (and most fun) way. Tickets are flexible: You can choose between single or return gondola rides, or combine your ticket with the Waldseilpark or scooter rental for an all-in-one adventure. Families benefit too—with the SBB Junior Karte, one child rides the gondola for free with a paying adult.

Whether you come for a scenic hike, a culinary highlight at the Berggasthaus, or a day packed with outdoor fun, the Region Wasserfallen is a place to recharge, celebrate, and connect with nature—in every season.
