Attention to Detail — Plaster Casts of Basel Minster

The Basler Münster houses a wealth of beautiful, strange, or bizarrely designed building components made from sandstone. Inaccessible, poorly lit, or far away, their rich details often elude the viewer. Since its inception, the Basel Cathedral Workshop has regularly produced casts of these works. These are preserved to serve as models for necessary repairs in the event of loss due to weathering or damage. Selected plaster objects are being shown in the exhibition, some for the first time. The oldest cast on display dates from the 1840s. They allow for a direct encounter at eye level and bring to life the medieval sculptors' attention to detail.
As part of the exhibition, the sculptor Haiggi Baumgartner has set up a workshop that comes to life twice a month (on the first and last Wednesday afternoon of the month). Visitors can watch him create casts and do restauration work.
There will be a free public opening of this exhibition on Thursday, May 22.
