Camerata Variabile — Night Owls

Don Bosco Basel
Tuesday, 23 April
19:30

In their April program, Camerata Variabile will present various pieces of night music, including two early works by Schönberg. The Camerata Variabile has not played Schönberg's “Transfigured Night” for many years; in the context of this program, this piece was a necessity. Normally one likes to juxtapose works from Schönberg's later creative periods in order to show the stylistic development that he went through in his life. This time, however, they are playing an even earlier piece instead—his “Notturno.” The harp that plays in Schönberg’s piece is featured again in the premiere of the new composition “Clair-Obscur” by Gérard Zinsstag, which reflects a completely different aspect of the night.
In the first half of the program, the Italian Boccherini string quartet “La Musica Notturna delle Strade di Madrid” takes the audience to Spain. It is a relatively little-known but all the more attractive find of string chamber music; written in 1780, the work consists of seven movements that evoke the nighttime soundscape of Boccherini’s adopted hometown of Madrid.
Tickets are CHF 40 for adults and CHF 20 for students and youths under age 18.
