On this evening, Jazz Festival Basel will be presenting a concert evening entitled “Vocal Jazz & Chansons.” Cyrille Aimée was born in Samois-sur-Seine, Fontainebleau. Her mother is from the Dominican Republic and her father is French. Thanks to the annual Django Reinhardt Festival in her hometown, she discovered jazz manouche at age 12. She spent her teenage years playing live music, soon also in Parisian clubs and cafés.
In 2010, she reached the finals of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. With guest musicians such as Roy Hargrove and Joel Frahm, she recorded the album “Live at Smalls,” which was released in 2011. In 2015, The Wall Street Journal called Aimée “one of the most promising jazz singers of her generation.” In 2020, she ventured into the digital realm with a series of YouTube video collaborations with pianist and jazz influencer Emmet Cohen, and her version of “La Vie en Rose” has been viewed more than 6 million times to date. She was suddenly considered the new star in the U.S. vocal jazz scene. New Orleans' unique blend of Latin American, French, and African American jazz heritage allowed her to fully explore all facets of her own musical identity, free from the shackles of genre, and connect with her own inner creativity.
Tickets are CHF 57.60-85.90.
