For the first time in its history, the Fondation Beyeler is dedicating a solo exhibition to Paul Cezanne (1839-1906)—a pioneer of modern art and an important artist in the museum’s collection. The exhibition focuses on the last and most significant phase in the French painter's career and shows Cezanne at his best: mysterious portraits; scenes of bathers; the alluring landscapes of Provence; and his favorite mountain, Montagne Sainte-Victoire, which the artist depicted in ever-changing views. In his studio in the south of France, Cezanne masterfully brought color, light, and form into a powerful tension, constructing revolutionary images that continue to inspire generations of artists to this day. With around 80 oil paintings and watercolors from famous institutional and private collections, the exhibition allows visitors to experience Cezanne's groundbreaking art in all its splendor and richness. It shows an artist who reinvented painting with every brushstroke, becoming the “father of modernism” or, as Pablo Picasso said, the “father of us all.”
