Program Day — The First Homosexuals. The Birth of New Identities 1869–1939

On the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Transphobia, and Asexualphobia (IDAHOBIT) and International Museum Day 2026, this program day will be held in conjunction with Kunstmuseum Basel's exhibition, “The First Homosexuals. The Birth of New Identities 1869–1939.” The diverse program opens up new perspectives on the scientific debates of the time. It invites visitors to explore the emergence of new sexual identities around 1900 in greater depth. The program on this day for listening, reading, discussing, and creating includes two screenings of the film “Anders als die Anderen” (Different from the others), a 50-minute silent film from 1919; a screening at 11:00 will have English subtitles, and a screening at 3 pm will have German subtitles. Participation is free, but a ticket is required (via the website). From 11:00-14:30, artist Marc Bauer will work on his wall drawing “Fear Rage Desire, Still Standing,” which is inspired by selected themes from the exhibition. From 13:00-14:30, there will be a panel discussion on the central ideas and wider implications of the exhibition. The discussion will be in English and is free of charge with registration. And finally, from 15:00-16:00, there will be a guided English-language tour of the exhibit.
Cost is admission + CHF 7.
