Römerfest 2023 (Roman Festival)
Every year on the last weekend in August, the ancient Roman town of Augusta Raurica comes to life for tens of thousands of visitors. More than 500 participants will reenact gladiator combats and wagon races or perform as craftsmen, dancers, musicians, and peddlers of all kinds. Families can watch the many shows and events; participate in as many as 30 different activities, including grinding grain on stone or making bread over fire; see how clothing and other goods were made; and even dress like ancient Romans. Many activities are geared especially towards kids, including pony rides and coin minting, and they can spend time in the Roman salon to get their hair and make-up done like in Roman times. It is a fun and educational weekend filled with great hands-on learning opportunities for people of all ages. Visit their website to get more information about this wonderful Roman festival weekend and to download a flyer with the full weekend program, which will be available from the beginning of July.
The festival is quite crowded, and parking is scarce; therefore, taking public transport is highly recommended. You can reach Augusta Raurica from Basel by train (take the S1 from the SBB, direction Frick/Laufenburg to Kaiseraugst); there will be a free shuttle-bus service between the Kaiseraugst train station and the festival site. Augusta Raurica can also be reached by bus 81 from Aeschenplatz, direction Liestal/Reigoldswil, to Augst (www.aagl.ch). It is a 10-minute walk from the bus stop, just follow the crowd! Note that your entrance ticket entitles you to a return journey in the TNW area to/from August/Kaiseraugst (2nd class) on the date of your ticket!
One-day tickets are CHF 18 for adults, CHF 13 for kids ages 6-17, or CHF 55 for the whole family (two adults and up to three children); two-day tickets are CHF 30 for adults, CHF 20 for youths, and CHF 100 for the whole family. Tickets can be purchased at the gate (starting at 9:30) or in advance at https://shop.augustaraurica.ch/en/tickets/1097. Please note that most stands only accept cash and there is no ATM on the festival site.
