The ex/ex theater, in cooperation with the Theater Basel, is staging a small-scale apocalypse. A fast-paced hockey game is underway on the ice rink at Margerethen. At the end of the ice hockey season, two hockey clubs, as different as night and day, are facing off: the ASC Icebreakers against the HC Mammut. The Icebreakers have already achieved everything there is to achieve this season; their main goal is to impress the talent scouts. The Mammuts must win, otherwise they risk relegation and their season will be over.
But the ice is melting. A race for the future is raging, against the melting water. How much longer can the obvious problem be ignored? Fans, coaches, parents, talent scouts, sponsors, and the young athletes themselves are all pursuing their own interests: keeping their careers on track, covering up the club's financial woes, or finding out what happened to the missing polar bear mascot. Meanwhile, the game on the ice is becoming increasingly dramatic.
In the ice arena, a story unfolds that resonates far beyond the hockey rink. The play unfolds with rapid shifts and delivers a powerful performance on the melting ice. "Ice Age" is a strange parable about our handling of the climate crisis, a masterclass in looking away and deflecting attention, a championship in making excuses and twisting arguments. But this is just the beginning. In the end, there are no more excuses, and nothing remains the same.
The theater production "Ice Age," directed by Olivia Ronzani, was created as an intergenerational project. Participating are a drama club from the Theater Basel, the ex/ex theater, and the author Sarah Calörtscher. Some of the dialogue is in Swiss German. The show will take place at the St. Margarethen ice rink; box office and entrance are on Unterer Batterieweg. The "ice cream parlor" is open before and after the performances.
Tickets are CHF 40 for adults (CHF 28 reduced) and CHF 10 for students.
