Tram Stop Renovations at Marktplatz

Starting on Monday, April 13, the Marktplatz tram stop will be renovated such that passengers will be able to board the trams without steps. During this construction phase, which will last until October, the tracks will also be renovated and IWB will be upgrading the utility lines underneath that area. When the renovations are complete, the tram floor will be in line with the platform, and the stop will be moved a few meters closer towards Schifflände. The works will proceed in several stages.

Preparatory works begin now and last until the end of June. During that time, the IWB (Basel’s municipal utility company) will be replacing energy and water pipes opposite the town hall, between Stadthausgasse and Hutgasse. At the same time, a district heating pipe in Hutgasse will be renewed. During this time, the farmers market and the shops around the market square will remain accessible but the bicycle parking area on the market square will serve as a storage area for building materials and construction equipment during the construction work. Trams will continue to run as usual during that time.

From June 29 to September 7, 2026, tram service through the city center from Barfüsserplatz to Schifflände will be stopped entirely for approximately 10 weeks. During this time, starting at the beginning of the summer school holidays, BVB (Basel Transport Authority) will be renewing the tram tracks between Gerbergasse and Schifflände. As a result, tram lines 6, 8, 11, 14, 15, 16, and 17 will be rerouted. These reroutings will primarily run via Basel SBB train station and Wettsteinbrücke. Tram lines 6 and 11 will run from Kleinbasel to Schifflände. Replacement bus service (EV 3) will operate between Theater and Burgfelderplatz during this period, serving the Barfüsserplatz stop at Kohlenberg. Bus lines 34 and 38 will run to Schifflände as usual. Bus lines 33 and 36 will run via Blumenrain and Schifflände to Claraplatz. The Distribus lines will terminate at the University Hospital. BVB will communicate the detailed detours at the beginning of June. A transport service for passengers with reduced mobility will be offered through the city center. The city market will take place in a smaller area during the track work.

To minimize disruption to tram services, work during this construction phase is scheduled from 7:00-22:00, Monday through Saturday. Also, while tram services through the city center will resume at the beginning of September, the Marktplatz stop will remain closed until October 16, 2026.
