As previously noted, there will be no trams running between Barfüsserplatz and Marktplatz from June 29 to September 6 (see https://www.basellife.com/tram-stop-renovations-at-marktplatz/). During these 10 weeks, starting at the beginning of the summer school holidays, BVB (Basel Transport Authority) will be renewing the tram tracks between Gerbergasse and Marktplatz. As a result, tram lines 1, 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 15, 16, and 17 will be rerouted. Find more details on their website at https://www.bvb.ch/de/aktuelle-informationen/baustelle-marktplatz/.

Support for People With Reduced Mobility

For wheelchair users and passengers with reduced mobility, there will be a shuttle service daily from 8:30-18:30 between Bankverein and Claraplatz. Use of this shuttle is free with a valid regular tram ticket. You must prebook the shuttle by phone at 061-461-0027. It can be ordered to the following stops: Claraplatz, Rheingasse, Schifflände, Universitätsspital, Marktplatz, Barfüsserplatz, Musik-Akademie, Theater, and Bankverein. In between pre-booked runs, the shuttle will wait at Bankverein (Aeschenvorstadt 25) and at the Schifflände stop in Eisengasse. If the bus is standing at these locations, passengers can board without prior booking.

Attracting Shoppers to Marktplatz During the Construction

To maximize progress, construction work will be conducted from 7:00-22:00, Monday through Saturday. During this time, the farmer’s market on the Marktplatz will still take place, albeit in a smaller area. To still attract shoppers to the farmer’s market and surrounding businesses, the vendors and neighbouring businesses are launching the campaign “mir blyybe offe” (we stay open). Customers will receive a voucher worth CHF 2 for the Basel farmer’s market at six businesses around the market square as a thank you for their purchase, including at Brezelkönig, Fielmann, Globus, Hotel Märthof, McDonald’s, and Swisscom. You can check the terms and conditions on the website https://www.bs.ch/en/verwaltung/prasidialdepartement/amter-und-bereiche/external-affairs-and-marketing/fairs-and-markets/basel-markets/basel-city-market.

Also with the aim of attracting shoppers to the Marktplatz during the construction phase, 10 artists will create graffiti artwork on a large construction wall that will be errected lengthwise across the Marktplatz on June 29. The canton is making this construction wall available to graffiti artists on Sunday, July 5, and Monday, July 6. Ten artists will decorate the wall with colorful murals, each incorporating one letter of the word “Marktplatz” (market square) into their artwork.
