It's rare that we get the chance to meet a true literary superstar here in Basel. In September it will happen: Booker Prize Winner (and three-time shortlisted author) Damon Galgut is coming to the Literaturhaus!
Galgut will be speaking in English about his prize-winning novel "The Promise," though there will be short readings in German (original text will be provided). The book tells of the increasing disintegration of a White South-African family that lives on a farm outside of Pretoria. The Swarts gather for the funeral of their mother Rachel. The younger generation, Anton and Amor, loathe everything the family stands for, not least the broken promise to the Black woman who has been working for them her whole life. With great narrative power, Galgut chronicles a family history that spans 30 years of political upheaval in South Africa, from Apartheid to democracy.
