Starting this fall, the Fondation Beyeler will be showing the expansive installation “Palimpsest” by the internationally renowned Colombian artist Doris Salcedo. Born in Bogotá in 1958, Salcedo explores the effects of violence and exclusion in her native Colombia as well as in other regions of the world through objects; sculptures; and large, site-specific interventions. In “Palimpsest,” Salcedo dedicates herself to fugitives who have drowned in the dangerous crossing of the Mediterranean Sea or the Atlantic Ocean in search of a better life in Europe over the last 20 years.
