Pianist Julia Hülsmann has a new timbre in mind—her long-standing working trio with bassist Marc Muellbauer and drummer Heinrich Köbberling has been expanded to include the saxophonist Uli Kempendorff, who with his strong presence miraculously succeeds in integrating seamlessly into Hülsmann's great lyric poetry and at the same time following the flow of the subtle compositions to give additional drive. His play is a mixture of nonchalance and intensity that suits this brilliant trio perfectly—he effortlessly fits into this group, which has existed since 2002, with his sensitivity, open attitude, and direct and authentic way of telling stories.
Trumpeter Nils Wülker’s 2022 album “Continuum,” an orchestral and nevertheless filigree masterpiece, was recorded with Wülker’s exceptional rhythm section and the BR Münchner Rundfunkorchester. It presents fascinating, overwhelming new music—an acoustic panorama that shines with energy, happiness, and confidence. On this evening, Wülker will be joined by Arne Jansen on guitar, Albin Janoska on piano, and Oli Rubow on drums.
