Opera — The Wonderful Mandarin / Duke Bluebeard’s Castle

Theater Basel

In one evening, audiences will be presented with two works by Béla Bartók about the abysses of desire. Director Christof Loy tackles Bartók's dark fairy tale world by combining two key symbolist works by the composer. The pantomime "The Wonderful Mandarin" is about a mysterious Mandarin, who seems immortal and can only be defeated by true love. In Bartók's only opera "Duke Bluebeard's Castle," Judith gradually comes closer to revealing the secret of her future husband, Duke Bluebeard, and discovers the cruel truth about his past. Christof Fischesser and Evelyn Herlitzius play the dark and gloomy couple. Ivor Bolton, the principal conductor of the Sinfonieorchester Basel, will be conducting his first opera performance at Theater Basel. The opera is in Hungarian, with German and English surtitles.
Tickets are CHF 30-140 for adults and CHF 20 for young persons under age 30.
